Surrey is blessed with some of the most beautiful backdrops in the UK – from rolling countryside and woodland trails to historic gardens and sweeping hilltop views. As a family photographer based here, I’m lucky enough to explore these spaces with families every year.

1. Guildford Castle Grounds
Right in the heart of Guildford, the Castle Grounds are a hidden gem for family photos. The colourful flowery gardens are beautifully maintained all year round, with bursts of flowers in spring and summer and rich tones in autumn. The historic castle walls add character and texture, making it a perfect mix of nature and history.
It’s also an easy, accessible spot for families with young children – plenty of open paths, benches for breaks, and space to let little ones explore safely.
2. Frensham Ponds
For something a little different, Frensham Ponds offers a sandy, beach-like feel right here in Surrey. Kids love dipping their toes in the water and playing on the sand which is a perfect place for play after your photoshoot.
Golden hour at Frensham is especially magical – the soft light reflects off the water, creating a warm, dreamy backdrop. If your family loves the outdoors, this location is perfect for a laid-back, fun session.
3. Winkworth Arboretum
This National Trust gem is bursting with colour and texture throughout the year. In spring, blossom and bluebells cover the ground; in summer, the trees are lush and green; and in autumn, Winkworth turns into a fiery mix of reds and golds.
The combination of woodland paths, lakeside views, and open lawns makes it a beautiful spot.
4. Farnham Park
If you’re looking for wide open spaces, Farnham Park is a fantastic choice. The rolling fields, clusters of ancient trees, and peaceful walking paths provide a simple but striking natural backdrop.
It’s particularly great for families with energetic children or dogs – there’s plenty of space to run, play, and just be yourselves while I capture the moments in between.
5. Box Hill
One of the most iconic spots in the Surrey Hills, Box Hill offers breathtaking views that are perfect for family photos with a dramatic, sweeping backdrop. The open meadows and woodland trails also provide quieter corners for more intimate portraits.
Because it’s such a popular beauty spot, I recommend timing sessions for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds – and to make the most of the golden light.
