Have your cake and smash it
Looking for a Cake Smash Photographer near Farnham Aldershot Guildford Farnborough Bordon Hampshire or Surrey ?
I won’t lie, the first time someone described a cake smash to me, I thought they’d lost their minds. You’re going to give a cake…to a baby? And just…let it make a massive mess that you have to clean up afterwards? On purpose? While it may seem absurd to actually encourage a child to make an unholy mess, you can’t argue with the visual results. They absolutely love it.
I was interested in where does the cake smash come from?
In fact the first use of the word viral as a verb only happened in 2004. Mainstream media wasn’t really that interested in sharing much amateur footage although that quickly changed. Cake Smash photography, wherever it really started, was born out of the early days of social media boom.
However, it is thought the smashing cake craze in the US probably originated from a Mexican tradition. The tradition, known as ‘La Mordida’, involves shoving the birthday boy or girl’s face into the birthday cake to take the first bite – mordida is the Spanish word for bribe, but in Mexican slang it means bite
There are lots of cake smashing customs throughout the ages. In ancient Rome, wedding cakes (actually a loaf of wheat bread) were smashed over the brides head to symbolize a fertile and fulfilling life. Guests ate the crumbs as a sign of good luck! Another wedding cake tradition stemmed from the bride and groom feeding each other cake, which somewhere along the line evolved in some cases to the couple grinding the cake into each other’s faces.
In Mexico, it is common for the birthday boy or girl (or man or woman) to have his or her face pushed into the cake. After the candles are blown out, the birthday person is supposed to take a bite of the cake — not using any utensils — for good luck.
Here, at the studio, it’s all about the fun……
Cake smashes in my Farnham near Aldershot studio are pretty simple: we strip baby to the nappy (you don’t want them clothed, trust me), pop a cake in front of them and watch ‘em go. It’s a brilliantly, messy, joyous thing to watch a one-year-old go to town on a Victoria sponge
You Can Absolutely Have Family Photos Too!
With the tea and coffee brewing once you arrive your little one can get settled in and get used to the studio. I usually start off with family images first-all of you together & any siblings before getting down to the messy business of the cake and then the bubbly bath to wash off all the mess. (bring a fluffy towel)
Where do I get my cakes from?
I have a fab cake maker who makes amazing cakes with a topper of your choice.

What If I Don’t Like The Mess?
Don’t worry, I have fake cakes I can use too and usually pop a few cupcakes on top for your little one to play with.
