How to Get Beautiful Photos from a Small Wedding Day

2025, Weddings

Small wedding photography Surrey: If you’re planning a small, relaxed wedding – maybe a registry office ceremony in Guildford, a quiet gathering in Windsor, or a midweek “just us” celebration in Alton – you might be wondering:

“Do we really need a photographer for just a couple of hours?”

My answer? Absolutely.
And not just because I’m a photographer – but because your love story deserves to be documented, no matter how intimate the day is.

I’m Zoe – a Surrey-based wedding photographer who specialises in natural, relaxed photography for couples who want their wedding day to feel simple, beautiful, and full of meaning. You can browse real moments over on Instagram.

Let’s talk about how you can get stunning photos from even the smallest wedding day.

Small Doesn’t Mean Less Meaningful

In fact, smaller weddings often feel more meaningful.
There’s no strict timeline or 100+ guest list to worry about – just you, your closest people, and the moment you say yes. Whether you’re getting married on a Wednesday morning at Guildford Registry Office, or celebrating with a quiet lunch after a ceremony in Windsor, these are the kinds of moments you’ll want to remember.

📸 What I Focus On During a Small Wedding

Here’s how I approach shorter coverage – typically 2 to 3 hours – to capture a complete story, even in a small window of time:

1. The Build-Up

Those little before moments – fixing a buttonhole, a last sip of coffee, deep breaths outside the venue – are full of quiet emotion. These are the nerves and anticipation that make the “I do” so special.

2. The Ceremony

Whether it’s inside Guildford’s Registry Office or on the steps of Winchester’s historic building, I’ll capture the emotion, the light in your eyes, and the spontaneous smiles. Even the quickest ceremony has magic in it.

3. Group Photos (If You’d Like Them)

Even if it’s just 5-10 people, I’ll guide you through a few relaxed group shots outside. We can make it fast and natural – no long posing or awkward stiff smiles.

4. Couple Portraits

This is my favourite part. A short walk nearby – a cobbled street, a leafy path, or even the registry office gardens – and I’ll capture relaxed, romantic portraits that feel like you. No pressure. Just genuine connection.

5. The Little Details

From the bouquet you picked yourself to the outfit you wore with pride – I’ll document the thoughtful touches that made the day yours.

💡 Top Tips for Getting Gorgeous Photos from a Small Wedding

  • Plan a short couple shoot nearby
Registry offices & guildhalls like Guildford, Windsor, Winchester or Alton often have lovely spots close by. A 15-minute walk after the ceremony can give you beautiful, relaxed images without needing to travel far.
  • Think about light
If you can, choose a ceremony time that gives us access to natural light (late morning or early afternoon works great – golden hour if it’s later!). I use soft, natural light to create flattering, timeless photos.
  • Book a weekday slot
Midweek weddings are often quieter at venues and registry offices – giving you space, calm, and the chance for even more relaxed moments.
  • Let go of tradition if it doesn’t feel like you
Your wedding can be whatever you want it to be. A champagne toast in a local pub after? An afternoon tea in your garden? I’ll photograph it all with care.

💬 Client Note: You Deserve This

If you’re a couple planning a small, personal wedding – maybe after years together or a second marriage – please know this:

Your story is valid, worthy, and beautiful.
Just because it’s small doesn’t mean it’s not important. You’ll still want to remember the way they looked at you. The nerves in your hands. The hugs, the laughter, the quiet moments in between.

“Zoe was amazing I asked her to take some natural shots I didn’t want anything to staged. And what I asked for is exactly what we got. Her attention to detail was amazing I would thoroughly recommend using her, she captured our wedding day beautifully.”
