🌿 How to Plan a Garden Wedding in Surrey (What You Need to Know)🌿
There’s something truly magical about a garden wedding. I hope this blog “How to Plan a Garden Wedding in Surrey (What You Need to Know)” helps you make beautiful memories for your special day.
The fresh air, the flowers in full bloom, the feeling of nature wrapping you in something timeless — it’s a dream for so many couples. And here in Surrey, with its rolling countryside, historic estates, and secret gardens, it’s easier than ever to create a beautiful outdoor wedding that feels relaxed, intimate, and totally yours.
When Adam and I decided to get married in 2021, we had to make the choice to celebrate in our garden due to the pandemic. So, we hosted an intimate garden party, with only a few close loved ones present. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we ever made. 💕🌸
If you’re thinking about planning a garden wedding, here’s everything you need to know to bring your vision to life — without the stress.
1. Find the Perfect Garden Setting 🌸
First things first: the venue!
In Surrey, you’re spoiled for choice. From private estates with manicured lawns to rustic family farms and hidden gardens at boutique hotels, there’s a style for every couple.
Things to consider when choosing your garden venue:
- Is there a good indoor backup option in case of rain? ☔
- Are there shaded areas (for very hot days) or heaters (for chilly evenings)?
- Can you personalise the space with your own decor?
- Does the venue have experience hosting outdoor weddings?
A few lovely Surrey venues to explore:
- Loseley Park (historic and romantic)
- Gate Street Barn (rustic with gorgeous gardens)
- Ramster Hall (stunning English garden vibe)
For us, we decided to host our wedding party at home. While it might seem like a daunting idea, it was the best decision for us. It made everything feel more personal and intimate. Plus, the garden was the perfect backdrop for our relaxed, backyard wedding party. 🌿
2. Think About the Season 🌷☀️🍂
Each season brings its own magic — and its own challenges.
- Spring (April–May): Fresh flowers everywhere, but be ready for a few April showers.
- Summer (June–August): Peak garden season with long evenings and warm weather (but think about providing shade and plenty of water!).
- Autumn (September–October): Glowing light, crisp air, and beautiful golden colours.
Top Tip:
Visit the venue at the same time of year you plan to marry if you can — gardens can change so much from month to month!
We got married in summer, which was perfect for an outdoor celebration. The weather was just right, with a lovely warm breeze, and the flowers in our garden were in full bloom — it felt like everything was aligned. 🌸
3. Embrace a Natural, Relaxed Style 🌿
One of the best parts of a garden wedding is that nature does most of the decorating for you!
Simple touches work beautifully:
- Wildflower bouquets 🌼
- Soft draped fabrics or bunting across trees
- Candles, fairy lights, or lanterns to light the evening ✨
- Wooden chairs, vintage rugs, and handmade details
For our own wedding, we kept things minimal but personal. We decorated our garden with homemade touches: lanterns, a few delicate fairy lights, and our own flowers. The natural vibe made the whole event feel so authentic and heartfelt.
4. Plan for Comfort (For You and Your Guests) 🪑
A few practical details make all the difference:
- Provide blankets or parasols depending on the weather.
- Offer insect repellent discreetly near seating areas.
- Choose footwear that works on grass or paths (brides: think flats, sandals, or wedges 👡!).
- Consider easy access for elderly guests or anyone needing extra support.
Little thoughtful touches = happy guests = relaxed, joy-filled day.
For our day, we made sure to provide plenty of seating, soft cushions, hay bales and cozy blankets. As the evening wore on, it got cooler, so it was the perfect way to keep everyone comfortable. 😊
5. Have a Solid Backup Plan 🌦️
Even in summer, Surrey weather can be a little… unpredictable.
Always have a “Plan B” — whether that’s:
- A marquee or stretch tent
- A lovely indoor space on-site
- Renting extra umbrellas (white or clear ones photograph beautifully!)
We were lucky with the weather, but we had a backup plan just in case. A marquee was our option if things turned rainy. If you’re hosting a garden wedding, this is one thing you can’t skip.
Planning a garden wedding in Surrey is all about embracing nature, thinking ahead, and making space for all those beautiful, unplanned moments that make a wedding day truly yours.
Whether you’re dreaming of a wildflower meadow, a secret walled garden, or your own family’s backyard, a garden wedding is the perfect way to celebrate love — simply, beautifully, and meaningfully.
