What to Wear for Family Photos This Spring – Surrey & Hampshire

After the chilly days of winter, I SO look forward to getting outside and photographing in the Spring air once again. The days are longer now, the bulbs and flowers are starting to come out too. When our girls were smaller, going to the park with no coat seemed like a treat at this time of year.

This is a perfect time to get in touch with your friendly Hampshire & Surrey family photographer to update your family’s images. If you are having a family get together for a special birthday? EVEN BETTER!

Choosing outfits doesn’t have to be stressful- I’m always happy to help. I’m here to make the process simple and stress-free so you can feel confident, relaxed and completely yourselves on the day. Read below for more outfit inspiration and tips.

-All these images below were taken in Spring time in the Surrey, Hampshire & Sussex area-

Think Soft, Light & Timeless

Clothing Ideas

It might still be a little chilly in Spring especially if you are coming on your session earlier in the day so layering with soft cardigans and jumpers in creams, whites soft blues, sage green and dusty pinks will look great with the Spring backdrop in Spring. Do avoid heavy blacks all over but, if it is your favourite, make it textured with maybe a cable or bulky knit. Aim for timeless clothing rather than trendy. Linen, cotton or light knits photograph beautifully.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

No Matchy-Matchy Please

Wearing all one colour will make you all blend into one and that’s not what we want. Rather than everyone wearing the exact same outfit, I always recommend coordinating. Choose 2–3 colours that work well together so your family looks connected without looking identical. It also keeps your photos feeling natural and relaxed. Add in cardigans, blazers and dresses with texture.

Jeans Always Photograph Beautifully

Always A Great Choice

Jeans are always a great choice for spring family photo sessions in Surrey and Hampshire. They’re timeless and relaxed and work effortlessly with soft knits, linen shirts and light blouses. Mid-wash or light denim tends to photograph best outdoors, especially in countryside or garden locations, as it keeps the overall look natural and fresh. When styled simply, jeans create that perfect balance of smart yet relaxed which looks wonderful in family portraits.

Location Matters (Surrey & Hampshire)

Local Scenery

Choosing a place for your Spring Family Photo Session that you all go to as a family, either to walk your dogs or just for a good dose of fresh air, will make new memories there for you as a family. Is there a local park, gardens, countryside place you love or woodlands that you would like to go to to have your family photo session at? For your spring family photos think creams, whites, light beiges, dusty blues, blush pinks, and sage greens – these shades will look great against the spring greenery, flowers, and outdoor light.

Dress Comfortably (Especially for Children)

Run Around
Comfort is key – when your children feel good in what they’re wearing, it shows in the photos. Avoid stiff fabrics or anything itchy, choose outfits that allow them to run, sit, and cuddle easily. The more relaxed everyone feels, the more natural and fun your family portraits will look. If they get a bit of dirt on their clothes, don’t worry! ….that’s what Photoshop is for!

Footwear & Finishing Touches

Footwear & Finishing Touches
Keep shoes simple and comfortable. Minimal accessories are ideal, so nothing distracts from your family’s fun. Hats, bows, or subtle scarves can add a touch of personality, but the focus should always stay on your family and the natural, relaxed feel of your photos.

What to Avoid

  • Large logos
  • Neon colours
  • All-black outfits
  • Busy patterns
  • Too many competing colours

Keeping it simple makes sure your photos feel timeless so they’ll look beautiful for years to come.

Bring your Dog

Part Of The Family
Your furry family members are always welcome at your spring photo session in Surrey or Hampshire. Bringing your dog adds to the fun!  For the best results, make sure your dog is comfortable and happy on the day – a favourite toy or treat can help.

Spring sessions in Surrey and Hampshire fill up quickly, so it’s a great idea to start thinking about outfits and locations early.  I’m here to help every step of the way, so you can enjoy the experience and capture beautiful memories that you will all treasure.
