What Not to Wear to Your Family Photo Session
As a Surrey and Hampshire Family photographer, I work with families across beautiful outdoor locations-from Surrey woodlands to Hampshire meadows.
When planning your family photo session with a Surrey photographer or Hampshire photographer, what you don’t wear can be just as important as what you do. Thoughtful styling allows your photographs to feel timeless, refined and full of connection-while the wrong choices can quietly distract from the very moments you’re there to capture.
This guide isn’t about rules. It’s about helping your images look elegant & natural for years to come.
Hiking Boots (and Anything Built for Everest)
Hiking boots are excellent at many things-family portraits just aren’t one of them. Their heavy shape and practical design tend to dominate photographs and pull focus away from faces and connection. Unless your session involves scaling a mountain (it won’t), lighter, more refined footwear will always photograph better.

Puffer Jackets
Puffer jackets may be wonderfully warm, but in photographs they have a habit of turning everyone into a floating head above a duvet. Bulky layers hide shape, movement and closeness-three things we want more of in family images. Opt for tailored coats, knitwear or elegant layers instead.

Muddy Boots
Shoes matter more than most people expect. Think about the setting-woodland, bluebell woodland, beach or countryside-and choose shoes that feel natural within it.

Bright or Neon Colours
Neon has a way of taking over a photograph. Bright, fluorescent shades reflect onto skin, overpower natural light and rarely age gracefully. Soft, muted tones photograph far more beautifully and keep the focus on connection rather than colour.

Large Logos
If your outfit announces a brand before it introduces you, it may be working a little too hard. Logos date quickly and can distract from emotion and expression. Timeless family photographs celebrate people, not labels.

All Black Outfits
Black can be chic-but outdoors, heavy black outfits often appear harsh and can lose detail in natural light. Softer neutrals such as charcoal, warm grey, navy or earthy tones create a more flattering and refined look in outdoor settings.

High Heels
Beautiful, high heels rarely mix well with outdoor family sessions. Uneven ground, grass and woodland paths make them impractical, uncomfortable and limiting. If you can’t walk, cuddle or play comfortably, it will show in your photos.

So, leave the hiking boots, puffer jackets, neon colours and high heels at home-your family photo session isn’t a mountain expedition or a disco! Choose comfortable, timeless pieces that let you move, cuddle, and laugh, and your future walls (and photos) will thank you.
