Families. They come in all shapes and sizes: large, small, blended, step, rowdy, quiet and everything in between. It really doesn’t matter what form your family takes. As long as you’ve got one other’s backs, it’s all good. And that’s the mood I try to strike with my Surrey family photography: a sense of togetherness. A sense that, even though everyone will grow up and spread their wings one day, today you’re all here together, loving life as one.
Planning a family photoshoot is exciting, but choosing the right outfits can be a bit daunting. As a family photographer in Surrey, I’ve had the privilege of working with many families, and I know just how important it is to select the perfect clothing for your session. Here are my top tips to help you look and feel your best, while ensuring your photos capture timeless, beautiful memories.
1. Start with Matching Colour Palette
Instead of matching outfits, focus on creating a coordinated colour palette that blends well. Choose 2-3 colours that complement each other. Soft, neutral tones like beige, cream, and pastels or earthy tones like olive, rust, and navy always photograph well and ensure your photos have a timeless feel.
2. Avoid Busy Patterns
While a little bit of pattern can add personality, busy prints or graphics can be distracting. Solid colours or subtle patterns (like stripes or florals) work best for family photos.
3. Consider the Location
The location of your photoshoot plays a big role in determining what to wear. When we’re shooting outdoors in Surrey’s beautiful parks or woodlands, consider outfits that complement the natural setting—soft greens, blues, and earth tones work wonderfully.
4. Dress Comfortably
Comfort is key, especially when you have small children! Make sure everyone can move easily, especially the children. Choose for outfits that allow them to play and be themselves during the session. Wrinkles or stiff clothing will not only affect their mood but also how they appear in the photos.
5. Layers Add Dimension
Adding layers to your outfits, such as jackets, scarves, or cardigans, can give your photos more depth and texture. Layers also provide flexibility—if it gets too warm, you can easily remove a piece and still look great.
6. Timeless Over Trendy
Family photos are meant to be cherished for years to come, so it’s best to avoid very trendy items that might look outdated in a few years. Stick to classic styles and simple silhouettes that will always feel elegant and relevant.
7. Plan Ahead for the Kids
Dressing little ones can be a challenge, but planning ahead can help. Choose soft, breathable fabrics for babies and toddlers to ensure they’re comfortable during the shoot. For older children, allow them to have some input, but guide them toward options that align with the family’s overall look.
8. Shoes
Shoes are often overlooked but can make a big difference in the overall look of your photos. Avoid overly casual shoes like flip-flops unless we are shooting at a beach. For a more polished look, go for clean, neutral shoes that complement your outfit without drawing too much attention.
9. Accessories
Simple, meaningful accessories can enhance your photos without taking the focus away from your family. Delicate jewelry, a stylish hat, or a classic watch can add a subtle touch. Just remember, less is more—don’t go overboard with too many accessories.
10. Coordinate, Don’t Match
It’s tempting to dress everyone in matching outfits, but coordinating looks more natural and sophisticated. Choose pieces in similar tones or complementary colors rather than identical clothes. This creates harmony in the photos while allowing each family member to express their individual style.
Choosing what to wear for your family photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning, you can create a timeless look that will result in beautiful, memorable photos. Stick to neutral tones, comfortable styles, and classic pieces, and your family will look picture-perfect!
